Failed to start the database service MSSQL$OfficeServers

Just installed a new demo environment and got stuck after installing everything: when I wanted to configure MOSS 2007 it told me it “Failed to start the database service MSSQL$OfficeServers”.

I browsed a lot of blogs, and one finally gave me an answer:

Here’s the solution: Go to “regedit”, browse thru “HKLM_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/Web Server Extensions/12.0/WSS/”. Then change the value of attribute named “ServerRole” from SINGLESERVER to APPLICATION.
