Office 365 Distilled EP 13: Digital illiteracy is enormously chewable

We are tasting such a good whisky (“enormously chewable”) so 13 is definitely not an unlucky number!

We will be at Ignite this year, maybe Las Vegas could be in the works for next year ? We will see.

5:34: with all things changing… How can we keep our end users notified?

Steve had a Microsoft technician for a day per month that would talk about all new things coming and released.
Steve is on the slow monthly release (after being bitten last year with a malfunctioning powerpoint right before giving a session to a live audience).

Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, …) is still a skill that is asked for new people, attests Steve’s daughter.

We are wondering how students can get their free Office 365.. Do schools have to register them? Or can they just ask for it ?

We are so old, that we don’t have numbers in our email address.

Back to communicating change: when does it stop being special? There is a big load when you move to the cloud. There is another one keeping up with the changes too.

13:10: The new search bar in Word, would we communicate that to our end users?

Steve has a workshop where he can show people (for the wow effect) how that works and looks like.
Yes, we need to communicate changes like this. A monthly newsletter that brings the story can work to decrease the barrier. Incorporate it into the monthly newsletter that is probably being send right now.
Agile is people over documentation

17: 23 We need a new metric: the dumbness level of your organisation (also called digital illiteracy)

You can measure this for example on the number of helpdesk tickets.
More stats are coming out on Office 365 to steer the company

19:08: Do you stop training after the process of adoption

What about new starters?
How do you provide training? Video’s? Classroom training?
Everything is rolled out.. does your training stop ? Recommendation is keep coaching work going. Have a place where people can ask questions, every wednesday. This is a low barrier way to help people out.

22:30: what is MVP (minimum viable product) in Office 365 for a new organisation?

Do you do navigation structure? File Plan ? What is the minimum you would roll out to a 500 person company?
First things are email, onedrive, client apps. After that, how do we want to manage collaboration ?

Which of the things would you want to have the hardest/ have the biggest issue with?
Is it people emailing documents? Projects not going well? Need to get rid of your shared drives? This will drive the first projects you need to do: department sites or an intranet or project sites.
So in the end: it depends.

33:27: At what point do you say to the organisation that Teams only doesn’t work anymore

At some point it will be chaos. At what point will you add department sites with governance, document deletion dates or metadata and search ?
Talk to the customer, get the requirements to see what they want to do. There is not a 1 size fits all.

37:21 Whisky: Talisker Port Ruighe

it is pronounced “portree”. Ruighe is the biggest town in the isle of Skye. It doesn’t have an age label (second Talisker to have that).
We enjoy our whisky, so we got ourselves a “sample services app” that will send us samples every 3 months so we don’t need to buy big bottles of whisky.

Talisker Port Ruighe

This whisky is finished in a port cask. Golden amber color, Sweet smell with some hints of lemon. Lots of smoke in the taste. An enormously chewable aftertaste that just jumps on you, reminding us of the Laphroaig quarter cask.
Tasting notes include jaffa cakes, oranges, white chocolat and raisins.
A very manly whisky, for when you are done with working on the field all day. and enormously chewable as well.
